A British actor born in St. Petersburg, Russia on July 3, 1906. He studied at Manchester Technical College and then worked in the advertising field, where actress Greer Garson advised him to work in acting. He began his career in 1934 in the movie Love, Life & Laughter and then Strange Cargo. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in All About Eve in 1951.
