An Algerian writer, born in Tunisia. Her father was a participant in the Algerian revolution. She worked on the national radio, which contributed to her fame as a poet. She moved to France in the seventies, where she married a Lebanese journalist, and in the eighties she obtained a doctorate from the Sorbonne University. She currently resides in Beirut. She is the recipient of the 1998 Naguib Mahfouz Prize for her novel Memory in the Flesh, which was later adapted into a TV series of the same title.
