Benicio Monserrate Rafael del Toro Sanchez was born on February 19th, 1967 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His parents were both lawyers and he is of Spanish and Italian ancestry.
After enrolling in the University of California San Diego to study business, Benicio left college to study acting under Stella Adler and Arthur Mendoza and at the Circle in Square Theater School in New York.
Initially, Benicio appeared in small television roles. However, his acting career gained pace rapidly after his participation in the “Usual Suspects” in 1995. Thereafter he became a well known performer with roles in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, “Traffic” and “Sin City” among other well known titles. Benicio Del Toro’s performance in “Traffic” earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
