John Orloff is an American screenwriter who studied writing at UCLA. Orloff spent a good part of his career working on commercials before coming into contact with Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg through his wife, a development executive at HBO. Although Hanks and Spielberg were not keen to produce Orloff’s suggested project – a melodrama based on William Shakespeare’s works – Hanks nonetheless recruited Orloff to work on the screenplay for the HBO Second World War miniseries “Band of Brothers”. Orloff proved successful in that role and even earned an Emmy nomination that was shared with the other writers working on the show. Shortly afterwards Orloff succeeded once again by adapting Mariane Pearl’s memoir, “A Mighty Heart”, into a screenplay. The script later earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Orloff’s latest work, “Anonymous”, discusses the ambiguities surrounding the Shakespeare authorship controversy. The title is currently filming.
