He made his Broadway debut acting alongside Jessica Lange and Alec Baldwin in the 1992 revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire." His performance earned him considerable attention. He got his big film break portraying the hitman Virgil in Tony Scott's "True Romance" (1993). He truly became a household name playing Tony Soprano in "The Sopranos," HBO's groundbreaking TV series that garnered a massive following during its runtime from 1999 to 2007. He won both a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series three times. He produced the HBO documentary "Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq" (2007), in which he interviewed ten Iraq War veterans about their near-death experiences in the war and their difficult homecomings. Gandolfini divorced his first wife Marcy Wudarski in 2002. He married girlfriend, former model Deborah Lin, in 2008. At age 51, Gandolfini passed away suddenly while on vacation in Rome, Italy, on June 19, 2013. He is survived by one son, Michael, with ex-wife Wudarski.
