An American writer and director, born in 1961. While studying in high school, Darnell wrote for the school's newspaper. He studied broadcast journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated in 1983, after which he spent four years working on experimental films, which helped him get accepted in the experimental program at the California Institute of the Arts to study animation, whereupon he started his career in that field through many animated films, most notably Madagascar, and Penguins of Madagascar.
