An American writer and director of Lebanese descent, born on January 7, 1928, in New York. He obtained a master’s degree in English literature and joined the United States Information Agency, working as an editor based in Beirut, Lebanon. He held the position of the public relations director at Loyola University in Los Angeles. His best known novel is The Exorcist (1971), which he later adapted into a screenplay, for which he won an Academy Award. He also wrote the screenplays for A Shot in the Dark (1964), What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (1966), and Gunn (1967).
