An American actor, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, under the name Oliver Burgess Meredith. He worked in a number of jobs, including as an editor and a chef, and then he joined a theater company. He participated in Winterset (1936). Among his awards and nominations are an Emmy Award in 1977, a Saturn Award in 1979 and 1982, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 1978. He married four times and had two children.
