An American actor, he was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He is the son of an English teacher who held many educational positions. He has appeared in a number of plays and also performed at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He graduated from Denison University before being discovered by director Robert Altman. His debut was in M*A*S*H (1970).
