A Mauritanian director and producer, his family emigrated to Mali after his birth. He then headed to Moscow to study cinema. His debut was by directing the movie Waiting for Happiness (2002), which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in the same year. One of his most prominent works is the movie Timbuktu (2014).
