A Maltese actor, born in Notabile, Malta on 4 August 1897. Among his most notable films are: Jungle Book (1942), Gilda (1946), Touch of Evil (1958) and The Alamo (1960). Joseph Calleia was one of the most famous screen villains in Hollywood. In 1914, he joined a band that performed in concert halls in European countries until WWI. After the war, Joseph traveled to Paris and then London to present his shows, and from there he traveled to Hollywood In 1926. In the early thirties, he turned to the cinema, where he excelled at playing the roles of foreign villains, and in the late fifties, he worked on television. In 1963, Joseph retired and sailed away from Hollywood, returning to his country, Malta, where he remained until his death on October 31, 1975 in Valletta, Malta. The Maltese government has issued two commemorative stamps in his memory.
