A German-born Austrian-American actress, born on January 12, 1910 in Dusseldorf, German Empire. She began her career in 1926. She became a legend in the 1930s after winning an Oscar in 1936 for The Great Ziegfeld, and 1937 for The Good Earth. She quit cinema after appearing in the film Hostages (1943). In 1997, she returned to the big screen again with her participation in the movie The Gambler. She spent a large part of her life in Switzerland, after leaving Hollywood. She then traveled to London, where she died. Her last appearance was in 2003 in a drama film of a joint American-German production. She died on December 30, 2014 at the age of 104. Among her other efforts was her helping get aid to children who were victims of the Spanish Civil War.
