A Hungarian-American escape artist and magician, born on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Hungary, as Erich Weiss to a Jewish family. When he was a child, his family moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, USA. He got his stage name from Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin, a French 19th-century magician. Houdini is considered one of the greatest escape artists of all time, gaining international fame for performing amazing illusions that aroused the interest of the masses. Houdini became known for his criticism of psychics who claimed that they could communicate with the spirits of the dead. He became a star in several films and died on October 31, 1926.
