British actor, born in Manor Park, London, England, United Kingdom. He is the nephew of theater actor Charles Bernard. He served in the London Rifle Brigade. In 1910, he made his theatrical debut in The White Coons Show and later had his first major theatrical success, starring in Kissing Time, when the musical transferred to the West End stage from Broadway. He was famous for his comic roles on stage and screen. At the outbreak of World War II, he produced several short propaganda films on behalf of the British Film Institute. He is known for Brief Encounter (1945), My Fair Lady (1964), and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970). He died at the age of 92 on January 30, 1982, in Littlehampton, United Kingdom.
