An English actress, born in Manchester, England, United Kingdom. She began her artistic career in 1942 and became famous for her dramatic roles on stage and in films. She played a prominent role in the film Alfred the Great (1969) and appeared regularly on the repertory theater stage in the 1940s. She progressed to appearing in starring roles in the early 1950s and achieved great success from the 1950s to the 1970s. She won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in 1967, for her role in Alfie (1966), and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 1967, she starred in the Broadway production of The Homecoming, for which she received a Tony Award nomination. Her other films include Accident (1967), The Offense (1972), Frenzy (1972), and The Maids (1975). She died on October 3, 1982, in London, England, United Kingdom.
