An English actor, director, and screenwriter, most notably in Charlie Chaplin's films, born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. He was a music hall performer before going to the United States with Chaplin, both members of Fred Karno's troupe, in 1910. He was working for Chaplin's stock company and played supporting roles in many of his films. He then moved on to writing screenplays, directing, and acting, especially in comedy short films. Some of his works are City Lights (1931), Keep Smiling (1925) and Suds (1920). He died on August 17, 1953 in North Hollywood, California.
