Irene Cara Escalera was an American singer and actress. She was born on March 18, 1959, in New York City, New York, USA. She co-wrote and sang the song "Flashdance... What a Feeling", for which she won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1984. Billboard named Cara a Top New Single Artist, and Cashbox Magazine awarded her both Most Promising Female Vocalist and Top Female Vocalist. Moreover, Cara was listed as one of the 12 Promising New Actors of 1976 in John Willis's "Screen World," Vol. 28. She was a graduate of the Professional Children's School in Manhattan. She formed the all-girl band Hot Caramel in 1999. Among her works are Fame (1980) and Sparkle (1976). She passed away on November 25, 2022.
