He died of uremic poisoning in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, on April 30, 1962.

He was father of actor Albert Cavens, who was also his father's assistant in teaching and performing stunts in Hollywood films.
He trained actress Jean Peters, considered the best lady pirate in the history of cinema, in the movie Anne of the Indies (1951), and he also trained actor Guy Williams in the TV series Zorro (1957-1961).
