British actor born in Pembroke, Wales, United Kingdom on February 18, 1899. He got married twice and had one daughter. He became a star in British films during World War II, and in the post-war period he worked in Ealing Studios. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), and worked for 8 years at the Reference Theater in Bristol. He was educated at Landau Ferry College, and gave up his studies for theatre, where he began his theatrical career in the twenties, then made his first film Lady in Danger (1934). Among his notable works are: Dead of Night (1945), A Christmas Carol (1951), and Invasion of the Triffids (1963). He died in Norwood, England, on September 6, 1992.
