A British actress, born in Lee, Kent, England, UK. She trained at the Lyric Stage Academy in London, and her first professional appearance was in Johannesburg when she was 20 years old, then she joined the Liverpool Repertory Company before appearing in West End theaters in London. She then moved to the US in 1916 and worked in Broadway, and until the early thirties, she divided her time between West End and Broadway. She worked in cinema in the thirties, and on television in the mid-forties, and she often played the roles of eccentric and frail old ladies. She was married four times and had no children. Among her notable works are Murder by Death (1976), The Producers (1967) and Quality Street (1937). She died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, on June 20, 1984, at age 101.
