English actor, playwright, and novelist, born in London, England, United Kingdom. He was brought up in Ewell, and educated at Kingston Grammar School. He graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1957. He is married to Claire Tomalin and they have a daughter. He made his writing debut in the series That Was the Week That Was in 1962. His credits inc;ude Clockwise (1986), Theater Night (1987-1989), and First and Last (1989), which was nominated for a BAFTA in 1990. Among the famous plays he wrote: The Two of Us (1970) and Noises Off (1982). He acted once in the series All the World's a Stage (1984).
