He was married to actress Angela Baddeley (1929-1976) and they had one child, with whom she remained until her death. He made his stage debut in 1923 without prior training. In the 1940s, he was director of was the director of the Old Vic Theatre School, and then Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. In 1954, he was awarded a CBE and in 1959 he received an honorary DLitt from the University of Birmingham. He is known for Look Back in Anger (1959), The Merry Wives of Windsor (1955), and The Dance of Death (1969). He died on April 29, 1986, in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom, of Alzheimer's.
