Ibrahim El-Batout was born on September 20, 1963 in Portsaid, Egypt. He majored in Physics at the American University in Cairo in 1985. He first started working as a sound engineer at the Cairo Production House. Shortly afterwards, El Batout began to experiment with filmmaking....Read more Since 1987, he has worked as a director, producer and cameraman, capturing stories mainly about human loss, suffering, and displacement. He has also directed numerous documentaries for international TV channels for which he has received many international awards. In 2004, El Batout made the feature film Smile. His second feature film Eye of the Sun has won the Golden Bull, the top prize at the 54th Taormina Film Festival in 2008. In 2010, El Batout completed his third feature film Hawi, and before it was even completed, it had already attracted the attention of the Hubert Bals Fund in the Netherlands, which awarded the film a Post Production fund. The film premiered in the Netherlands at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2011.
