He travelled through many parts of the world with his father and was introduced to the cultures of France, Britain and Spain. He finally settled in New York at the age of seventeen. He was determined to become a professional actor someday. Robert performed minor roles in the films “Weird Science”, “Back to School” and “Baby it’s You” before he was selected in 1987 for a leading role in “The Pick-Up Artist” where he acted alongside Molly Ringwald. Robert received critical acclaim for that role. However, the roles that were offered to him thereafter were not major ones. This was until he assumed the character of Charlie Chaplin in an autobiographical film about him titled “Chaplin”. This film was directed by the British film director Richard Attenbrough. The role Robert played in “Chaplin” garnered him a lot of fame and led to his nomination for an Oscar in 1992. However, he did not win the Oscar. Robert took a furlough from acting in 1996 after he was accused of speeding. The police discovered that he was (intoxicated) and found (controlled substances) in his car. He was arrested and served six months in jail. Despite the incident he was soon given a leading role in “Gothika” where he would act beside Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz.
