D. Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) lives alone after the death of his wife Emily (Susanna Thompson), Joe lives in a world of sorrow due to the loss of his pregnant wife who died during a Red Cross mission in Venezuela. Joe tries to return to work in the hospital. Although he does not believe in the existence of afterlife, Darrow begins to believe that his dead wife is trying to communicate with him.
