Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Marine Sgt. John Basilone gets ready to leave for Guadalcanal. Meanwhile, the young journalist Robert Leckie joins the Marine Corps.

With the 1st Marine Division guarding an important airstrip on Guadalcanal, the 7th Marines, including Basilone, arrive on the island as reinforcements. Meanwhile, Basilone faces a personal tragedy.

Exhausted after long, onerous months, marines are sent to Melbourne for rest, where Leckie meets an Australian woman, while Basilone seeks to go back home in order to help in the selling of war bonds.

As Leckie and his comrades end up in Cape Gloucester, New Britain, the weather doesn't agree with them and they start suffering physically and mentally.

As he goes on a war bond tour, Basilone becomes famous. Meanwhile, Leckie is reunited with his unit, and Sledge sees his first real combat.

As they deal with a shortage of water, the troops suffer a heavy loss while attempting to cross the airfield. On the other hand, Leckie gets evacuated.

Sledge struggles as he tries to cope with the death of his comrades as a result of a bloody battle. Meanwhile, back at home, Basilone becomes more and more dissatisfied as he continues on his tour.

As he grows fed up with his tour, Basilone takes on training new soldiers and falls in love with Sgt. Lena, whom he marries, after which he leaves with his soldiers for Iwo Jima.

For the first time, the Marines come upon civilians. Once more, Sledge is forced to deal with ethically contentious issues. After the battle, the soldiers learn of a new bomb that has wiped out an entire city in Japan.

As the troops return home following the surrender of the Japanese, Leckie gets a new job and begins a romance with Vera, Sledge has a hard time adapting to normal life, and Lena goes to see Basilone's parents.
