In 2012, two detectives reach out to former partners Martin Hart and Rust Cohle for information about one of their old murder investigations that bears resemblance to a current crime.

Cohle's troubled past is revealed as he continues to suffer from its lingering effects. As tension rises between Hart and Cohle, they are forced to find a way to work together as they trace clues about Lange's murder.

Hart and Cohle make some headway into the case as they connect it to another death. Despite pressure to leave the case to a new task force, they manage to find a viable suspect.

As the murder investigation forces Cohle to confront his past, his return to the drug gang that he once infiltrated ends on an unexpected note. Hart's mistress reveals their relationship to his wife.

As Hart and Cohle manage to find Reggie Ledoux, they come to realize that he is involved in much darker activities than they thought, which causes Hart to lose his temper and implicates the two detectives in a cover-up.

As Cohle becomes suspicious of Tuttle's involvement in various disappearances, he faces pressure to stop his line of investigation. Maggie seeks to take revenge on Hart for his affairs, putting the partners' relationship on the line.

As Cohle and Hart find evidence that connects several of their old cases to the Tuttles, they make a move in an attempt to find the person who has been pulling the strings this whole time.

As Cohle and Hart confront Geraci, they uncover disturbing details about the man responsible for all the horrific murders that occurred and his connection to the Tuttle family.
