With his release imminent, Jean Valjean looks forward to leaving his traumatic prison experience behind, but his release comes with the shocking realization of how ostracized he is. Fantine struggles to cope after her lover abandons her and their daughter.

A new start gives Valjean different standing in society after he adopts a different name, but that doesn't stop him from developing a tense relationship with Javert. Fantine resorts to drastic measures to provide for Cosette, landing herself in trouble as Valjean interferes.

Valjean puts his freedom on the line to save a man from being imprisoned in his stead. As Valjean saves Cosette from her abusive relatives, he finds himself pursued by Javert.

As Cosette falls in love with Marius, a worried Valjean tries to interfere. Marius uncovers a plot against Valjean and intercedes, only to find himself facing a dilemma when he learns of the identity of the man who once saved his father in Waterloo.

As Marius fights for his love for Cosette, Valjean takes Cosette away after an attempted home invasion. The June Rebellion of 1832 breaks out, driving Marius to the brink as he believes that he has lost Cosette.

As Marius's life hangs on the line, Valjean steps in to save him for Cosette's sake. Javert makes a shocking decision that makes him question his views.
