As Lenu and Lila continue to live separate lives; Lila works at a shoe store, and Elena resumes her education.

Lila is enraged at Lenu for attempting to mend her relationship with Stefano.

Even at the price of her health, Lila devotes all of her efforts to the grocery shop.

Lenu spends the summer on Ischia with Lila and Pinuccia in fulfillment of Lila's wish.

During their summer vacation on Ischia, Lila and Nino become perilously close to one another. Lenu feels doubly deceived by this, and it crushes her.

Lila comes to the conclusion that she cannot carry on with her life, so she moves in with Nino and breaks up with Stefano.

Elena appreciates her time spent in Pisa studying. When she gets ill, she reads the journals Lila gave her while she was visiting Naples and discovers the struggles Lila has had over the years.

Elena completes her studies at the university, finds a good man, and then goes back to Naples.
