When Cairo University opened its doors in 1908, Taha Hussein was the first to join it. He studied modern sciences, Islamic civilization, history and geography, and a number of oriental languages. In 1914, Cairo University sent him to France, where he studied literature, psychology and modern history at the University of Montpellier and obtained his MA. He returned to Egypt in 1919 to be appointed as a professor of Greek and Roman history at Cairo University. His most famous novel is his autobiography The Days, in addition to Curlew's Prayers, which was adapted into a movie that is considered one of the classics of Egyptian cinema throughout its history. Taha Hussein died on October 28, 1973 at the age of 83.
