German director, screenwriter and producer, born in Baden-Württemberg in 1955. He studied directing at the University of Television and Film Munich and his graduation project film, The Noah's Ark Principle, was screened at the opening of the Berlin International Festival in 1984. He then founded the production company Centropolis, after which he directed his major film debut, Joey (1985). He's known for Independence Day (1996), Godzilla (1998), The Patriot (2000), and The Day After Tomorrow (2004).
