He is an American actor and singer, born on September 11, 1967 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was encouraged by his parents to learn music. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music. He released his first album at age 19. He shifted to acting and became known for Independence Day (1996), Hope Floats (1998), and The Iron Giant (1999).
