He is an American actor, director, and producer born in New York in 1956. He studied at the University of New South Wales in Australia and entered the acting field on local television in Australia. He also presented some roles in some TV Series. His cinematic debut was in 1979 with the Australian movie Mad Max, which achieved great success. He joined Hollywood, and delivered numerous performances, such as Braveheart (1995), in which he played the character of Scottish warrior William Wallace, for which he won an Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture. His film roles include What Women and Signs. His notable films as a director include The Passion of the Christ (2004).
