Melissa Leo is an American actress. She was born in Manhattan, New York, and studied at New York University. She did not begin her acting career until the 1980s, when she was cast in a number of TV shows. She made her big breakthrough in 1993 playing Det. Sgt. Kay Howard on the TV series "Homicide: Life on the Street." Additionally, she had recurring roles on "All My Children" (1970-2011) and "The Young Riders" (1989-1992). Her film breakthrough came with a role in "21 Grams" (2003). She later earned critical acclaim for her performance in "Frozen River" (2008), which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She also won several awards for her portrayal of Alice Ward in "The Fighter" (2010), including a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild award, and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Leo is currently working on the HBO series "Treme" in the main cast.
