His began his acting career in 1971 when he performed in the play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” the first of several theatrical performances during his early career. Gere appeared in his first Hollywood film, “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” (1977), opposite Diane Keaton and Tuesday Weld. In 1978, he landed his first leading role in Terrence Malick’s film, Days of Heaven. From there, Gere’s career took off and he starred in various Hollywood films including “American Gigolo” (1980), “An Officer and a Gentleman” (1982) and “Pretty Woman” (1990). Although Gere has been nominated for numerous Golden Globe awards, he only won the award once for his role in “Chicago” (2002). Gere also received a lifetime achievement award at the 34th Cairo International Film Festival in December 2010. Gere has been married to supermodel and actress Carey Lowell since 2002, and they have one son.
