Mahmoud later progressed to cinema roles and made his first film appearance in the 1975 title “Hatta Akher al-‘Umr” (“Till the End of My Days”). Among Mahmoud’s most notable film roles was a part in the television series “Raafat al-Haggan”. Mahmoud received the award for best actor at the Alexandria Film Festival for his role in the film title “al-Gentil”. He also received another award for best actor at the 2002 Arab Film Festival in Paris for his role in the cinema title “al-Sahher” (“The Sorcerer”). Mahmoud has had a leading role in several stage productions which include “Khashab al-Ward” (“Rosewood”) and “848”. Mahmoud is among a small minority of Egyptian actors who proved adept at performing a variety of roles with great vitality. His role in Ashraf Fahmy's “Wa la Yazal al-Tahqiq Mustamirran” (“The Investigation is Ongoing”) was one of his most critically acclaimed. His most successful roles among critics and audience alike were his portrayal of a blind character in “al-Kit Kat” and an aspiring drug dealer in Alaa Abdel Khaliq'a crime thriller masterpiece "al-Keif" (The High).
