He worked as a painter until a 1984 boating accident, in which he swam for three hours to save stranded friends and nearly drowned himself. Set apart by his gravelly Southern voice, piercing blue eyes and self-described "tough-looking exterior," Patrick often plays intense bad guys or military or police types.
