End of Watch was hailed by critics for its engaging handheld documentary aesthetic, and tangible camaraderie between leads Peña and Jake Gyllenhaal, both of which enhanced the intense cop story. One critic praised "some of the best on-screen banter in years," another said "Gyllenhaal and Peña are after a lived-in camaraderie and a street-level realism. Peña, especially, succeeds; you buy him every second."
