American actor and director, born in 1943, of Scottish/German descent. He attended Hofstra University on Long Island, but did not finish his studies so he switched to dancing on the music stage at the Washington Dance Studio. He started with acting on television with his brothers in 1950, after which he continued to provide small roles in several television series, until 1971, when he made his first appearance on the cinema screen through the crime movie The Anderson Tapes. He starred in his first movie, The Happiness Cage, and then participated in several films, including The Deer Hunter, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1978.He was nominated for the same role for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, in Pulp Fiction (1994). He participated in the movie Catch Me If You Can in 2002, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He married casting director Georgianne Walken in 1969.
