She was named after her hometown of Winona, Minnesota, and moved with her parents to Petaluma, California when she was ten, at a time when the rules of the American Theater Institute only accepted thirteen-year-old candidates. Director David Seltzer nominated her to participate in his movie Lucas (1986), which was her cinematic debut. She participated in many major films, most notably Little Women and The Age of Innocence, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. She won the Golden Globes Award as best actress for her role in The Age of Innocence.
