An American writer and army officer who participated in several wars. He served as lieutenant colonel in command of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, at the Battle of Ia Drang during the Vietnam War. The film We Were Soldiers (2002) was based on a book he co-wrote. He appeared in the documentary miniseries Inside the Vietnam War in 2011. He died on 10 February 2017 in Auburn, Alabama, USA.
