He is an American writer, producer and director whose father and grandfather were writers. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1987 and studied literature. He debuted his career as a writer in the sitcom Roseanne (1989), before writing his first movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), which was adapted into the famous TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. He's known for Firefly, Angel, The Cabin in the Woods and The Avengers.
