His most notable works include The Defiant Ones (1958), Guess Who's Coming to Dinner...Read more (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967), and Lilies of the Field (1963), for which he won an Oscar for Best Leading Actor. He also won an honorary Oscar in 2002.
