When the war began in 1941, he was discharged from the army as a result of serious injuries. In the following years, he returned to Moscow. He founded a theater for children and youth, and worked in the railway workers' theater as a director and actor. His plays were very popular, and his most important works were: The Cranes Are Flying in 1957 and Shumney den in 1961. He died in 2004 in Moscow at the age of 91.
