Australian actress born in 1955. She studied at Loreto Convent and the Western Institute of Technology and graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1977. She was chosen for the leading role by director Gillian Armstrong in My Brilliant Career (1979), for which she won two BAFTA Awards for Best Actress and Best Newcomer. She is also known for The Dressmaker (2015), A Passage to India (1984) and Husbands and Wives (1992). She married Australian actor Colin Friels in 1984, with whom she has two children.
