A British writer, born in Lancashire, England. He later settled in the United States. His credits include The General Died at Dawn (1936), The Magnificent Fraud (1939), and Sundown (1941). He won the Academy Award for Best Writing, Original Story for The House on 92nd Street (1945). He died on May 22, 1949.
