He played Alex DeLarge in Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" (1971), which was the first of many roles he would play as the psychopathic villain. He moved to the United States in the late 1970s. "Time After Time" (1979) was his first American film. McDowell struggled with alcohol and cocaine addictions throughout the 1980s, and his work suffered from it. His career picked up in the 1990s, with more villainous roles in "Star Trek: Generations" (1994) and a number of other films. He had a recurring role on the television series "Entourage" and "Heroes." He also acted in the Oscar winner for Best Picture "The Artist" (2011). The British veteran, who now resides in Los Angeles, has acted in over 100 films.
