After seventeen years of professional screenwriting, he decided to turn to film directing, and made his debut with the film Dragonwyck in 1946, after which other films followed, such as Cleopatra (1963) and Guys and Dolls (1955). He was the first to win four Oscars in two consecutive years and the second director to win an Oscar for Best Director twice in a row. He won the award in 1949 for A Letter to Three Wives and in 1950 for All About Eve. He also won the Best Screenplay Award for the same two films. He died on February 5, 1993.
