A Japanese actor born in Tokyo, he began training in martial arts at an early age. He has a Bachelor of Arts from Nihon University. His Japanese films include Ring (1998) and The Twilight Samurai (2002). His Hollywood appearances include The Last Samurai ( 2003), The Wolverine (2013), and Life (2017). He also co-starred in a number of TV series including Lost, Helix, and Westworld.
