Irish-American actress, born in Clinton, Massachusetts, on December 6, 1900. Her mother was a soprano and her father was a priest, who encouraged her to join the church choir. She worked in teaching English and drama in public schools, then went to Paris to study pantomime. Afterwards, she returned to the United States to join the Academy of Dramatic Arts. She was married to Jack G. Lee (1952-30) and then got married to the actor and director Robert Gist (1958-1953). She won a Golden Globe in 1945 for the movie Mrs. Parkington (1944). She also won the same award in 1965 for Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964). Among her most important works are The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), and Bewitched (1964-1972). She died on April 30, 1974 in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, of uterine cancer.
